Mod North & Co. founder Jessica Cortes is an interior designer turned maker who lives and creates in Wisconsin.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interior Design from Mount Mary University, which propelled Jessica into a rewarding 13-year career as an interior designer who worked on hundreds of projects in the commercial design field. She was fortunate to design corporate, higher education, healthcare and military / government interiors. She left the design world in 2012 after the birth of her first child and enjoyed being a stay-at-home mother. Once baby number two arrived, she was eager to do something creative again, but wasn't sure what that looked like.
Following the advice of a good friend, she opened her first Etsy shop selling vintage home decor and furnishings called SoLoMarket. During one of her buying trips to Florida, she came upon an old vintage agate clock and decided to purchase it. It didn't work, and some of the dial markers were missing, but the agate slice itself was a stunning aquamarine blue. She decided to learn how to fix it and replace the dial markers and listed it for sale in her Etsy shop where it ended up sitting for over a year.
Then something magical happened. In the early spring of March 2016, Etsy featured the clock on their front page! It garnered a lot of attention and sold within a couple of hours. Over four thousand hits and many messages later, Jessica was overwhelmed with people asking her when she would be restocking the clock. Since she only sold one-of-a-kind vintage items, she had to tell them one by one that there wouldn't be any more.
Later that evening, she and her husband were discussing the day's events and how exciting it was to be featured and to have the exposure, when a light bulb went on. She said, "What if we could create a modern version of this awesome vintage clock?" She immediately went to work and figured out how she was going to design, create, and sell a more modern and contemporary agate desk clock. Shortly thereafter, the initial product listing went LIVE with the very first batch of agate desk clocks being shared with the world.
In 2017, Jessica decided to rebrand her shop as Mod North & Co. and began to expand the product line. She went to work adding agate wall clock designs as well as her exclusive agate garlands, which took off like wildfire.
In the two years that followed, she also developed the design of the agate dreamcatchers and agate wall art in order to create a cohesive roundup of agate home decor products. She made the business an official LLC, applying for her first design patent and several trademarks. 2019 also marked the beginning of her partnership with Anthropologie who sought Mod North & Co. out to sell her signature Agate Desk Clocks.
2020 brought a renewed sense of taking modnorth.com to the next level by changing ecommerce platforms and designing a brand new website. Marketing efforts were also expanded with a new partner, allowing the business to soar to new heights.Over 3,600 Mod North Clocks and Wall Hangings are currently in their forever homes today—with many more to come!
Jessica lives with her husband and five young children in the lake country area of Oconomowoc, WI. They welcomed their fifth child in October of 2019.
