Agate Wall Hanging vs. Garland: Which Is Right for Your Space?

This is probably the question I field most after "how do I clean it" — customers land on my shop, see both the Uma collection and the garlands, and aren't sure which one actually fits their space. It's a fair question, because they're genuinely built for different jobs, even though they use the same genuine Brazilian agate.

Here's how I'd walk you through it.

What makes a wall hanging different

A wall hanging — like the pieces in my Uma collection — is mounted on a single piece of wood, usually walnut or white oak, with multiple columns of agate slices suspended below in graduated drops. Because it's built on one continuous mount, it reads as a single, cohesive piece rather than a loose collection of parts.

This makes it the right choice when you want a true focal point: above a sofa, above a bed in place of a traditional headboard, or over a large entryway console. Wall hangings in my shop range from compact 18-inch pieces up to large-scale 36-inch statement installations, so there's real range in how much presence you can bring into a room.

What makes a garland different

A garland is narrower and more vertical — typically a single column of agate slices connected by leather cording or wire, finished with a tassel at the bottom. Where a wall hanging is built to command a wide wall, a garland is built for the in-between spaces: beside a window, in a stairwell, flanking a doorway, or as a pair framing a piece of furniture.

Garlands also tend to be more budget-friendly, since they use fewer slices — which makes them a great way to bring this look into your home without committing to a large-scale piece right out of the gate.

Questions I'd ask myself if I were you

How wide is the wall space you're working with? Under about 12 inches, a garland is almost always the better fit. Wider than that, and a wall hanging becomes a real option.

Do you want a bold focal point, or a quieter accent? Wall hangings command visual weight and work best as the standout piece in a room. Garlands are more of a supporting player — lovely on their own, but not asking for all the attention.

Is this going above furniture, or standing on its own? Wall hangings are generally built to anchor whatever's beneath them — a bed, a sofa, a console table. Garlands do beautifully in standalone spots that don't have furniture underneath at all.

What's your budget and timeline? Garlands tend to be more accessible price-wise, and many of mine are ready to ship right away. Larger wall hangings — especially made-to-order pieces — carry a longer lead time and a bigger investment, so factor that in if you're working toward a deadline.
